Founding Mothers

History books often focus on the Founding Fathers, but who were the women shaping the nation’s early years?

In honor of America’s 250th birthday, join Quinnipiac University professor Dr. Lisa Burns—a leading expert on U.S. First Ladies—for an exploration of the “Founding Mothers.” Dr. Burns will reveal how early First Ladies used “parlor politics” and White House social customs to wield genuine political influence in the fragile new republic.

Dr. Lisa M. Burns is a Professor of Media Studies at Quinnipiac University. A prolific researcher on political branding and public memory, she is the editor of The Cambridge Companion to US First Ladies and author of First Ladies and the Fourth Estate. Her work offers a deep look into how the press and the public have shaped—and been shaped by—the women of the White House.
