The Long Journey Home for Albert Afraid of Hawk

Albert Afraid of Hawk, Lakota Sioux, died in Danbury, CT, in June 1900, while performing with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

He was buried in an unmarked grave in Wooster Cemetery. In 2008, Bob Young, a Danbury historian, found the grave in the cemetery archives.

Family members on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation requested that Albert’s remains be returned to the Pine Ridge Reservation for reburial according to Lakota heritage.

This presentation by Nick Bellantoni, CT State Archaeologist Emeritus, tells the life and death of Albert Afraid of Hawk and his family, the story of the Lakota people, the exhumation and forensic work to identify him and the final repatriation of his remains to South Dakota.
