In an effort to increase public awareness of the Earned Income Credit, Mayor Boughton is strongly encouraging residents to check their eligibility during tax preparation. As a result, several programs are currently available to assist residents during tax season.
"The goal of providing tax preparation assistance is to inform low and middle income Danbury residents of the earned income tax credit and to help them determine if they qualify for the tax benefits," explained Mayor Boughton.
A Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in Danbury will be accessible to all residents starting February 2nd. VITA is an IRS sponsored program that provides the community with free tax filing assistance. Every Saturday, until April 12th, from 9am to 11:30am, the Danbury VITA site, located at WCSU's midtown campus, Warner Hall room 103, offers free tax filing assistance to Danbury residents. This program is available to all Danbury residents regardless of their gross income. To utilize this free tax filing service, residents must contact the Mayor's Office at 797-4511 to schedule an appointment.
AARP Tax Specialiists will assist senior residents with any queries they may have regarding EITC and with tax preparation beginning Feburary 5th. To make an appointment for the AARP program you must be 50 years of age or older. The electronic tax preparation is free. New York State taxes and business and rental property taxes cannot be completed by this program. Apointments for Tuesdays and Wednedays from 8:30 am to 10:45 am can be made by calling the Elmwood Hall Senior Center at 797-4686.
The Community Action Committee of Danbury (CACD) at 66 North Street will begin its free tax preparation assistance on February 2nd for households with $40,000 or less gross income. Appointments for electronic filing can be made for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 5pm and Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 7pm. In addition, appointments will be taken for Saturdays from 10am to 3pm. To make an appointment please contact CACD at 744-4700, x116.
The Bridge to Independence & Career Opportunities (T.B.I.C.O.) is also offering electronic filing for low income families earning $39,000 or less gross income. Simple returns focusing on EITC tax benefits can be prepared every Thursday from 3:30pm to 7pm beginning of February 14th and every other Saturday from 10am to 1pm starting February 23rd. Tax preparation at T.B.I.C.O is located at 39 Rose Street and is free. An appointment must be made by calling 743-6695, x17.
